Impact Insider: Topsoil and Agriculture
Think soil’s just dirt? Think again. Dive into why our planet’s soil is crucial for tackling climate change and what steps we can take to save it before it’s too late.

Ever wondered what’s really under those lush fields and blooming gardens we pass by? Well, it’s not all as perfect as it looks. Beneath that green exterior, our topsoil is crying out for help.
Here’s the dirt: we’ve lost half of our topsoil in the last 150 years. This loss isn’t just about less dirt for planting; it’s about losing the very ground that feeds us, with 95% of our food being grown in it. Intensive farming methods that chase quick harvests are digging us into a deeper hole, stripping away soil faster than nature can replace it.
Even following the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s guidelines, the rate of erosion is still 25 times higher than the rate at which topsoil forms. This alarming statistic highlights a critical need for change in our agricultural practices.
But there’s a silver lining. Switching to no-till farming could be a game-changer. This method keeps the soil intact, helping it stay rich and full of life. Studies show that going all-in on no-till could reduce erosion drastically, keeping our soil—and our future food supply—secure.
Research from University of Massachusetts Amherst indicates that if no-till methods were adopted globally, they could prevent up to 95% of the erosion that might otherwise occur over the next century.
