Introduction

On Karma Wallet, we rate 15,000+ companies on their social and environmental performance to make it easy for you to shop aligned with your values. All Karma Wallet Company Ratings include a score out of 16 mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

So, how do we calculate Karma Wallet Company Ratings? What role do the UN SDGs play? What about greenwashing?

Great questions.

Trusted Data Sources

Our data is our foundation. It all starts with data from over 30 trusted data sources like B Corp, Leaping Bunny Certified, and Just Capital.

We rely on third-party data sources, as opposed to company reported data, to ensure the information we pass along to you is 100% accurate.

Role of the UN SDGs

Karma Wallet looks at millions of data points then map them to a standard that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN SDGs are a shared blueprint for sustainability and social justice across the world. The SDGs are built on decades of work from countless countries alongside the United Nations, and address initiatives like clean energy and gender equality.

We group 16 of the 17 SDGs into two subcategories – People and Planet. We then group from there into 4 sub categories – Sustainability, Climate Action, Community Welfare, and Diversity & Inclusion.

For each UN SDG, a company can earn a few different scores depending on their data.

  • Passed: 1
  • Partial: .5
  • Neutral: 0
  • Failed: -1
  • No data: 0

The sum of all of the UN SDGs determines a company’s rating on a scale of -16 to 16.

We also showcase all of their Company Values – which a company earns when they have data sources directly correlated with a specific issue.

From Giving Back to Ethical Labor Practices, the Company Values section makes it easy to see at a glance which issues a company cares about.

We compare the company’s People and Planet score against their Sector Average, so you can see how they rank compared to other companies in the same industry.
